On Friday and Saturday the Girls Swim and Dive Team traveled to Eastern Michigan University to compete in the division 3 state finals. The top 16 swimmers in each event on Friday come back to swim in the finals on Saturday. Most events have 30 to 35 swimmers so placing in the top 16 is a remarkable accomplishment.

The Trojans had our largest group of qualifiers ever. Mallory Irelan qualified for the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, Allie Pumford qualified for the 200 free and 100 free and Katie Clevenger qualified in diving. The team also qualified all 3 relays. The medley relay consisted of Allie Pumford, Lily Espinoza, Mallory Irelan and Katie Clevenger, the 200 free relay team of Katie Clevenger, Erika Ochodnicky, Allie Pumford and Mallory Irelan and the 400 relay team of Allie Pumford, Sidney Voss, Erika Ochodnicky and Mallory Irelan. Each swimmer is only allowed to compete in 2 individual events and 2 relays. So Irelan chose to compete in the 50 free and fly and the team was not able to compete in the medley relay.

Pumford got the team rolling with a strong swim in the 200 free placing 20th. Next up was Irelan in the 50 free where she qualified for day 2 by placing 14th. Irelan was back in the pool for the fly and again earned a top 16 spot placing 16th in prelims. Pumford was up next and turned in a great swim in the 100 free with a lifetime best time placing 25th. 36 divers compete on Friday with only the top 16 advancing to Saturday. Clevenger dove well against outstanding competition and moved on to Saturday by placing 15th after 8 dives. The divers would do their final 3 dives on Saturday. The 200 free relay team of Clevenger, Ochodnicky, Pumford, and Irelan placed 17th and the 400 free relay team of Pumford, Voss, Ochodnicky and Irelan placed 20th.

On Saturday Mallory finished off an amazing career in the pool placing 15th in the 50 free and 15th in the fly. Katie in her first year of diving moved up to place 13th. The swim and dive team has accomplished many noteworthy feats. Perhaps the most impressive was the rewriting of the record board. The team broke 8 school records out of 12 possible events. The Trojans also piled up the best record by a Trojan swim team going 9-1 on the season. Coach Murray couldn’t be more proud of all the team accomplished this season and all the great memories they made along the way.
