SOCCER (GIRLS) – Owosso 2, Corunna 1 – Tough Defense & Strong Goalkeeping Bring a Shorthanded Trojan Victory
Owosso-Corunna rivalry games always find a way to deliver. Tonight’s game was no different. In a game when one of our players was ejected with nearly 55 minutes left to play, we knew odds were against us for the remainder of the game. After observing Corunna’s improved skill and speed in the first 15 minutes, we were not surprised by their on-going 2nd half attack. Anna Raffaelli’s 2 goals, combined with the gritty defensive efforts of Lauren Stowe and Allison Perry, helped bring home the first win of the season. The most valuable player of the day was unquestionably Izzey Newbury, the Owosso Keeper who made countless necessary stops, above and beyond the 11 recorded saves. Coaches Zoe Klem, Frank Tew, and I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work and perseverance shown by our team. Corunna put forth an impressive offensive attack, but sometimes a gritty defensive effort is all that’s needed to bring home a victory. We are so proud and hopeful for a great 2018 season. Key Players: Izzey Newbury, Anna Raffaelli, Lauren Stowe and Allison Perry
Owosso 3, Swan Valley 4 – For the second time this week, Owosso soccer played with 10 players for an entire half; this time against opponents, Swan Valley. Our entire team was forced to step up, yet again, in the face of certain adversity. Our opponents understandably controlled the game, but Anna Raffaelli helped established a number of attacks. Following her early goal (3 minutes into the game), she finished off the half with a fantastic last second, left-footed shot. Fatigue certainly showed second half; however, our team continued to persevere with strong play by defenders, Lauren Stowe, Kayla Manley, and Allison Perry. Raffaelli made her mark with our final, late game goal, with a great cross into the box to Jaycie Crites. The team is certainly looking forward to entering next week with a full roster, as we prepare for 3 games.
