CROSS COUNTRY – On a bittersweet day for Owosso XC, Kaitlyn Owens, Jorden Sowash and Andrew Dallas brought the sugar. Kaitlyn finished the day with a PR, a second-place finish, and a ticket to the state championship next weekend. Kaitlyn trusted her race plan by letting the lead pack get away from her for a mile before she gradually came from behind and eventually outsprinted three athletes in the final stretch. Kaitlyn is now looking to finish her outstanding senior season with her sights set on a top 30 all-state finish. After an early season injury that set Jorden Sowash back the better part of a month, he got back in his groove finishing just one second from his PR set back in the first meet of the season. Jorden finished in 5th place and as the only sophomore in the top 10. He will be joining Kaitlyn in seeking all-state honors next weekend at the Michigan International Speedway. Andrew Dallas breathed a sigh of relieve after punching his ticket to the state championship next weekend. After finishing one place out of qualifying two seasons ago and having an off day last year, it was finally Andrew’s time to shine. Our hard-working senior captain broke into the 16’s (16:46) for the first time in his running career and looks to provide a lasting memory next weekend.

Our three qualifying athletes didn’t provide the only bright spot of the day. We couldn’t be prouder of the performance of all of our athletes today. Our girls entered the meet seeded 4th, over 30 points behind Alma and only 1 point ahead of Corunna. Five of our seven girls set PRs today (many of them by a significant amount) with one more hitting a season best mark. These great improvements led to a 4th place finish, just 8 points behind Alma and 9 points ahead of Corunna. Unfortunately, that means that we narrowly missed out on qualifying as a team, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. Looking back at last year, our girls finished 65 points behind Alma (who’s top 6 runners ran again this year) at regionals. All seven of our runners finished faster today than our 4th fastest runner last season. Our boys team had an almost identical experience. Entering the meet in 5th place and a mountain to climb to qualify for the state meet, we left everything we had out on the course and finished in 4th place, just 10 points out of 3rd. Like the girls, we had five athletes set PRs today with the other two only 1 and 3 seconds off. Last season our boys finished 6th with no state qualifiers. Our top 3 runners today finished faster than our first runner last season. To say that our athletes improved and had an amazing season would be an understatement! I am very proud of all of our runners.

One final shout out to our seniors who ran their final race today. Allison Perry, Anna Raffaelli and Sam Stechschulte: You have all brought more to this team and the cross-country program that I can express with words. You will be missed greatly next year and thank you so much for all of your hard work!
